How to treat RSD or Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

As RSD injury attorneys, we have handled numerous RSD cases to successful conclusion for the past 20 years. In every RSD case, our client is treated by an expert in pain management called a pain management specialist. A pain management doctor has the technology and experience to accurately diagnose RSD (or CRPS). This is a complicated diagnosis and, unfortunately, many doctors are unable to make the diagnosis. After the diagnosis is made a treatment plan must be planned and carried out.

Oftentimes, to obtain the correct diagnosis of RSD or CRPS, the pain management doctor will use the following diagnostic tools:

  • Bone scan. The will inject a radioactive substance into you in order to view your bones with a special camera.
  • X-Rays. That will show loss of minerals in the bones. It can show the seriousness of the condition if you have had it for many years.
  • Sympathetic nerve tests. These tests such as thermography measure the skin temperature and the blood flow at the RSD site. It will compare the characteristics with the unaffected limb such as the other leg or other arm.

Treatment plans will include medication. Oftentimes, pain medication will include an NSAID drug, which is called Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, such as Motrin, Aspirin, Aleve, etc. Sometimes, anti-depressants such as Neurontin are used to treat the damaged nerve. Sometimes, Prednisone is used to reduce the inflammation. Sometimes hot and cold compresses can reduce the swelling in the infected areas. Sometimes a TENS unit which is electrical nerve stimulation and spinal cord stimulation can help. Physical therapy is useful because it helps with strength and motion.
